Adopt-a-flowerbed is an effort to encourage public involvement in ongoing community beautification. Volunteers / sponsors can plant, weed and care for park flowerbeds.
Any interested organization, individuals and neighborhood groups can care for their "own" flowerbed. You may adopt a favorite site or the Parks and Recreation Department can suggest a flowerbed needing to be adopted.
The expectation is that the volunteer will prepare the bed prior to planting, plant the flowers (provided by the city), weed the flowerbed at least weekly, pinch back spent blooms, water the flowers (3 times per week), trim grass around the bed and remove the plants and rake the bed after the first hard frost.
The Parks and Recreation Department will provide the bedding plants, all the fertilizer and insect and disease control products and provide planting and maintenance instructions.
Adopt-a-Flowerbed signs will be placed next to the flowerbeds to recognize those volunteers who have taken part of their valuable time to keep our city beautiful.
If you would like to learn more or have a representation come talk to your group, please email Parks and Recreation or call 515-278-3963. You can also fill out our Adopt a Flowerbed Application (PDF).
